How to Improve Your Life in 2022

It’s the middle of December, and we have two weeks left before we’re ringing in the new year.

What will you do differently in 2022? What new habits will you embrace to improve your life and your career? How can you demonstrate that you’ve learned and grown in the past year, that you know more about yourself and the world around you?

Let’s say you don’t take the time to think about it…what then? Have you ever felt ‘New Year, New You’ déjà vu, a sense of no defined goals and lack of preparedness? Break the cycle by starting to contemplate your resolutions for the new year before we’re actually in it.

The word “resolution” means a firm decision to do or not do something. Thinking through your resolutions is a great journaling opportunity.

Ask yourself:

What do you want in, or out of, your life?

What were your big wins this year?

Where did you miss the mark?

What could you do differently that would improve your life and career?

How do you want to end this year to start the next fresh with optimism?

Do you have negativity that you need to let go of or a relationship that needs mending?

I like to make my resolutions based on a few different spheres of focus in my life:

CAREER | RELATIONSHIPS | SELF | DREAMS

Thinking about your career, where do you see yourself at the end of this upcoming year? What do you want to be proud of? What would you do if you just had the [fill in the blank: money/confidence/time] to do it? Are you on track towards that dream position, promotion, management role, or more opportunities to lead?

Here are some potential career goals to include in your New Year’s Resolutions:

  • Start a business/side hustle
  • Create a 5-year plan for your career
  • Hire a coach
  • Develop your leadership skills
  • Build your network
  • Find/design a role that allows you the freedom to work remotely

Determine what you want for yourself professionally and approach it strategically. Start with your stated goal. What are the actionable steps you need to take in order to make it your reality? Now add timelines and metrics.  I’ll share the initial steps that I have taken for my 2022 resolutions.

My 2022 goal: Write a Book

(This has been a big dream of mine, and I’m ready to take it on!)

Action step 1: I want to write a business book for young women early in their careers, but what is my angle? What can I offer that taps into my history, expertise, and passion?

Action step 2: Hire a writing coach/editor, someone with the right skills and experience working with amateur writers writing business books.

Action step 3: Find a publisher that believes in me and my vision for the book.

Action step 4: Set a schedule of book deliverables.

Action step 5: Structure my day so that I have at least 2 hours each weekday to write and do it.

Planning ahead is exciting when it isn’t last minute; I encourage you to seize the day and start now! You are the driver of your life and career. Take charge of it today!
